Watercolour sketch by Graham Naylor

The whole land was plunged into darkness
As Jesus died on Calvary;
Why did that perfect Son of God
Have to bear such agony?
Because men's hearts are evil
And dark and vile within,
Jesus alone was pure enough
To pay the price of sin.
Praise God! my Saviour rose again
That Resurrection morn;
In triumph, Jesus conquered death
So men could be re-born.
I cannot bear to dwell upon
Lonely Gethsemane
Or the suffering of my Saviour
As he died on Calvary;
I'd rather ponder on the power,
That raised Jesus from the dead,
The power to resist temptation
In the holy life He led.
I know that this same power
Is available to me,
And if I would but trust him wholly,
I could live triumphantly.
