20 May 1943

When we had shared our good-night kiss,
Our farewells had been said;
When the front gate closed behind you;
And the dark road you began to tread;

I stood with the front door just ajar,
One last loving kiss to throw;
How did I know just where you were?
I knew by your cigarette's glow.

Since then, we have had our love fulfilled,
Our cup of joy, overflow;
Your love has proved as warm and bright
As did your cigarette's glow.

Through many dark months we have been parted
And it's lonely, I have been and yet,
Your love shines to me through the darkness
Like the glow of your cigarette.
